The Annual Rail Pilgrimage: Part 1: The Planning
Jerusalem, Mecca, Dwarka, Bodh Gaya etc. are some of the holiest places in the world visited by millions and millions of people from around the globe. For some, it’s a ritual that makes them visit these places year after year while for some, these holy places hold spiritual significance. For some, it’s a way of connecting with God while for some it’s just a way to find peace and solitude from this maddening world. However, for the four of us (names to follow soon), we have a different line of thought. We may or may not undertake annual pilgrimages to

After reaching Marwar Jn. at an unearthly 02:45 AM, me and my friend Ganesh Iyer, headed to the SL class waiting hall to catch some sleep. Unfortunately, the steel chair felt more like a rock and with great difficulty and torture, we spent a couple of hours there. Outside on the platform, there were a few families sleeping on the floor. Upon asking, we found that they were headed to Ramdevra Mela. Ramdevra is near Pokhran on Raikabagh Palace – Jaisalmer line. Around 04:30 – 04:45
The 3M Magic – Monsoon, Marwar & Meter Gauge – Part 1
My last journey by a meter gauge train happened to be sometime in the early 90s when I used to visit my grandparents in Jodhpur. We used to take the Bhuj-Palanpur MG, get down at Bhildi, wait for a couple of hours and then catch the next train coming from Palanpur and heading to Jodhpur. I have faint memories of those trips and really enjoyed riding behind the chugging alcos. So, when a friend of mine, Ganesh Iyer suggested that we cover the last MG (meter gauge) section in Rajasthan (Marwar Jn. – Mavli Jn.) during the 4-day long Independence
A Weekend Ride to Nandi Halt Railway Station
Frozen in time, Nandi halt railway station is a beautiful and picturesque halt station lying between Bangalore and Chikballapur. Built as a part of the historic Bangalore-Chikballapur light railway, the station building walls and edifices bear testimony to its founder, Sir M. Visvesvaraya. This beautiful yet neglected railway station sits in the midst of fields with a lovely banyan tree dominating the area. Several cool peepul trees add to the serenity and beauty of the place. The railway line was sanctioned in September 1909 as a two-feet, six-inch gauge railway line. The section from Devanahalli to Chikballapur that passes through Nandi
Home is Where the Heart is: Onboard Gandhidham Express
This trip report is an account of my journey onboard 16506 Bangalore – Gandhidham Express undertaken in January 2015. Being a native of Kachchh, Guj, it was my long cherished dream to attend the Rann Utsav made largely popular by Amitabh’s “Kutch nahi dekha toh kuch nahi dekha” ads for Gujarat tourism. The Rann Utsav is held every year at Dhorodo near the Indo-Pak border and is an aura you can’t afford to miss. With authentic Kutchi cuisine, folk dances and handicrafts on display, a visit to the white desert especially on a moonlit night is sure enough to mesmerize
A Thunderous Welcome by the Rain Gods
This trip report is an account of my journey onboard 02698/06590 Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai – Yeshwantpur One Trip Special undertaken in April 2014. Ever since the Rajdhani’s, the Shatabdi’s and other premier trains crisscrossing the country were LHBised, I had a long pending dream – To travel in these swanky looking coaches just once be it SL, 3A or 2A. Little did I knew that I will be given a thunderous welcome by the rain Gods and my dream will be fulfilled by the almighty in such a special manner? Tuesday, 29th April – I was happily working in
